Dixmoor Crews Restore Water After Pipe Burst

Water main near Spaulding Avenue and 143rd Street in the far south suburb ruptured Thursday afternoon

Crews late Friday morning restored water to far south suburban Dixmoor after a water main break completely knocked out service to the community.

Michael Giglio, with Calumet City Plumbing, said his crews got a call from Dixmoor officials at about 8:30 p.m. Thursday about a water main break near near Spaulding Avenue and 143rd Street.

The break was in an 8-inch water main that rests about six feet underground, Village President Dorothy Armstrong said. The damage was too much for village public works crews to handle so Giglio and his crews were called in.

Giglio said his staffers put a clamp on the broken pipe but said it wouldn't be replaced. He said the age of the infrastructure in the area was to blame for the break.

Officials said the issue was fixed shortly after 11:30 a.m. Friday.

Armstrong said there were two other smaller water main breaks in the area early Friday.

She said the village received a $1 million grand for infrastructure repairs, with work scheduled to start in the spring.
