Touhy Avenue will remain closed through Wednesday following a deadly construction accident that claimed the life of a 47-year-old worker, transportation officials said.
The worker was killed and four people were injured when a massive beam came crashing down during construction at an Interstate 90 construction site at Touhy Avenue. The worker killed was identified by authorities as Vicente Santoyo, 47, of Berwyn.
Touhy Avenue is expected to remain closed between Wolf and Lee Streets in Des Plaines through Wednesday, according to the Illinois Department of Transportation. Two lanes will remain closed on eastbound I-90 at Touhy and one westbound lane will be shut down through the evening rush hour, officials said.
Traffic on eastbound Touhy Avenue was being directed north on Wolf, east on Oakton and south on Mannheim before returning at Higgins Road. Westbound traffic will reverse that route, officials said.
The accident caused miles of backup for drivers ahead of the morning commute Tuesday. Midday commuters were expected to see a slow I-90 from Schaumburg to O'Hare Airport.
East-west alternatives include Oakton Road, Golf Road and Algonquin Road, which runs diagonally along the tollway.
It is still unknown what exactly happened to cause the huge bridge support to collapse.
