DCFS Investigating Death of Boy, 1, at Daycare on Chicago's North Side

State child welfare authorities are investigating the death of a 1-year-old boy Wednesday afternoon at a home daycare facility in the North Side Rogers Park neighborhood.

Officers were called at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday for reports of an unresponsive child at the daycare facility in the 1500 block of West Pratt, according to Chicago Police.

The boy, who lived in Rogers Park, was taken to Saint Francis Hospital in Evanston, where he was pronounced dead at 1:29 p.m., police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office said. An autopsy Thursday did not rule on cause and manner of death, with results pending further studies.

The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services is investigating allegations of neglect against the daycare provider, according to department spokeswoman Alissandra Calderon.

She said the daycare provider is properly licensed and was in good standing with the department, but has voluntarily suspended caring for other children pending the outcome of the investigation.
