Dan Ryan Reopens After Truck Accident

The southbound lanes of the Dan Ryan Expressway at 26th Street reopened Saturday afternoon, hours after a dump truck crash damaged an overhead highway sign.

The sign was "caved in and leaning" over the Dan Ryan Expressway, said ISP District Chicago Trooper Genelle Jones.

Officials closed down the roadway to traffic, and vehicles were diverted off the expressway near Roosevelt Road. Two northbound lanes were also closed as a precaution in case the sign shifted accidentally during its removal.

The wreck occurred when a dump truck struck the sign near 22nd Street, according to ISP District Chicago Trooper Chris Asmar.

The sign was brought down around midday by two cranes and then cut into smaller pieces so it could be put into flatbed trucks and towed away, ISP District Chicago Master Sgt. Dave Keltner explained.

No one was hurt and the dump truck stayed on the scene, said Asmar.
