Cubs' World Series Win Comes With Lucrative Payday for Players

Getting a shiny trophy and a big ring are two of the biggest benefits of winning a World Series title, but for the Chicago Cubs, they’ll also get a pretty sweet paycheck out of their championship run.

According to a release from Major League Baseball, each player on the Cubs will receive a postseason share worth nearly $369,000.

According to Jesse Rogers of ESPN Chicago, the Cubs issued 66 full player shares, 8.7 partial shares, and four cash awards from their postseason run. The players then voted on who would receive what money.

According to Eric Fisher of the Sports Business Journal, the Cubs got a World Series-winner pool of $27.6 million from Major League Baseball, which is a new record in the sport.

While a payout of $369,000 isn’t a huge deal to big-ticket guys like Jason Heyward and Jon Lester, that kind of money makes a difference to younger players on their first big league contracts.

Players like Addison Russell, Kris Bryant, and Willson Contreras are all making under $1 million a season on their contracts, meaning that the postseason bonus checks are going to be a nice Christmas gift under the tree for players like that.
