Cubs Trade Miguel Montero To Blue Jays After Critical Comments

Miguel Montero criticized Jake Arrieta for his handling of the Washington Nationals’ running game in a loss last Tuesday

Less than a week after Miguel Montero was designated for assignment in the wake of disparaging comments he made about Jake Arrieta, the Chicago Cubs catcher has been traded to the Toronto Blue Jays.

The trade was finalized Monday, the Blue Jays announced. The trade includes money from the Cubs to offset some of Montero's remaining salary. The Cubs will receive a player to be named at a later date.

Montero criticized Arrieta for his handling of the Washington Nationals’ running game in a loss last Tuesday.

The Nationals stole a team record seven bases against the Cubs, with Trea Turner stealing two right off the bat in the first inning. After the game, Montero criticized Arrieta for not doing a better job of holding runners on base.

The next day Montero was designated for assignment by the Cubs.

Montero said goodbye and thanked fans for their support in a series of tweets last week.

“Dear fans, today I say goodbye to the greatest fans. I want to thank you for the support,” Montero said. “It was an awesome ride. Winning the World Series was simply fantastic. Thank you to my teammates, good luck to everyone of you.”

Arrieta told reporters there are no hard feelings between him and Montero.

“I’m sad to see him go. It’s an unfortunate situation,” Arrieta said.

“I know what it was about, and there’s a lot of honesty there,” Arrieta said. “I didn’t do him any favors. I was slow to the plate.”

Montero said that he apologized to Arrieta after the interview in the clubhouse, and the pitcher confirmed that the two did speak and work things out following the criticism.
