Cubs Acquire Derek Holland in Trade With Giants

Holland is having a strong season against left-handed batters in 2019

The Chicago Cubs have made another move to solidify their bullpen, acquiring pitcher Derek Holland from the San Francisco Giants.

Holland, a 32-year-old reliever who spent time with the Rangers and White Sox before signing with the Giants, has a 2-4 record and a 5.90 ERA in 31 appearances so far this season.

The hurler has been much more effective against lefties than against right-handed batters this season, holding southpaws to a .182 batting average and striking out 18 batters in 77 at-bats. He has surrendered just one extra base hit to a lefty this season.

The Cubs also acquired cash considerations from the Giants in the trade, while sending cash considerations to the Giants as well.

Holland’s contract will pay him a base salary of $6.5 million this season, and will have escalator clauses for next season if he becomes a starter for the North Siders.

To make room for Holland on the 40-man roster, the Cubs have designated reliever Tim Collins for assignment. Since Holland won’t be in Milwaukee for Friday’s game against the Brewers, the team will likely use the vacated 25-man roster spot to call up outfielder Ian Happ, while waiting until Saturday to make another move to officially activate Holland.
