Cubs Activate Nicholas Castellanos, Put Him in Lineup vs. Cardinals

Castellanos was acquired in a trade with the Tigers on Wednesday

The Chicago Cubs are wasting no time in getting two of their new acquisitions into the lineup Thursday, as both Nicholas Castellanos and Tony Kemp will get their first starts against the St. Louis Cardinals.

The Cubs officially activated Kemp to their 25-man roster on Wednesday, and on Thursday made Castellanos an official member of the club, optioning infielder Robel Garcia to Triple-A Iowa.

Both players will make their Cubs debuts on Thursday night in the series finale against St. Louis. Castellanos will play right field and bat second against the Cardinals, while Kemp will play second base and bat eighth for the Cubs as they try to wrap up their nine-game road trip on a positive note.

Brad Wieck, the relief pitcher the Cubs acquired from the San Diego Padres in the Carl Edwards Jr. trade on Wednesday, is not on the team’s 25-man roster, but on Tuesday, the Cubs activated reliever David Phelps after acquiring him from the Toronto Blue Jays.

The Cubs and Cardinals will square off at 6:15 p.m., with Jon Lester set to take the ball for the North Siders. A win would give the Cubs a 4-5 road trip and a one-game lead over the Cardinals in the division race.
