Chicago Cubs fans can be forgiven for wondering if the team is trying to invent new ways to lose after the team blew yet another lead and lost to the Pittsburgh Pirates in walk-off fashion on Friday night.

Clinging to a 2-1 lead in the ninth inning, Cubs pitcher Kyle Ryan gave up an infield single to Bryan Reynolds with one out. Starling Marte grounded into a fielder’s choice after Brandon Kintzler came into the game, but after Josh Bell was intentionally walked, Colin Moran also drew a walk to load the bases.

Kintzler, who had just been activated from the injured list Friday, then walked Cole Tucker to force in the game-tying run, and Kevin Newman drilled an RBI single to center field to finish off the game and send the Cubs to yet another heartbreaking road defeat.

Kintzler took the loss, erasing a comeback that could have ended a road losing streak for the Cubs.

Tony Kemp hit a go-ahead triple in the eighth inning to score the lone two runs of the game for the Cubs. Kris Bryant and Javier Báez each registered hits in the game, and Ian Happ got a hit and scored a run as a pinch hitter.

Kyle Hendricks’ strong outing went to waste for the Cubs, giving up just one earned run in seven innings of work.
