Cubs Reach Pair of Milestones in Win Over Cardinals

With nine games left in the regular season, the Cubs accomplished two more remarkable feats in Friday's victory

The Chicago Cubs still have nine games left in their regular season, but in a season full of history they accomplished two more remarkable feats on Friday afternoon at Wrigley Field.

The Cubs beat the St. Louis Cardinals 5-0 at the Friendly Confines in the first game of a three-game set, and the win was their 98th of the regular season. That not only eclipses the 97 wins that they racked up last season, but it also ranks as their best season performance in that category since they won 98 times during the 1945 season.

Of course, any Cubs fan familiar with the team’s long history of losing knows that the 1945 season is the last campaign in which the team made it to the World Series.

The Cubs are still looking to become the first Cubs squad since 1935 to win 100 games, a total that they hit on the nose during that season (in which they also reached the World Series).

The 98-win total wasn’t the only remarkable milestone that the Cubs hit on Friday either. The win was their 56th of the season at Wrigley Field, which ties an all-time record for the franchise. They still have two more games left this season at home, meaning that they could potentially break that record on either Saturday afternoon or Sunday night against the Cardinals.

To put a nice cherry on top of the sundae, the Cubs also clinched home-field advantage throughout the National League playoffs on Friday night when the Washington Nationals lost in extra innings to the Pittsburgh Pirates.
