Cubs Place Daniel Descalso on Injured List, Activate Derek Holland

The Chicago Cubs made a roster move on Saturday, placing infielder Daniel Descalso on the 10-day injured list and officially adding pitcher Derek Holland to the 25-man roster.

Descalso is dealing with a sprained left ankle, according to the team, and the move was made retroactive to July 24. The infielder has only had six at-bats in the month of July, going 1-for-6 with a walk and two strikeouts for the Cubs. He has not registered an extra-base hit since May 20 against the Philadelphia Phillies.

Holland was acquired in a trade with the San Francisco Giants on Friday, and was added to the 40-man roster in a move that saw reliever Tim Collins designated for assignment. Holland has limited lefties to a .182 batting average this season, and has only allowed one extra base hit to a left-handed batter this season.

He will be available to pitch for the Cubs as they take on the Milwaukee Brewers on Saturday evening at Miller Park. The Cubs will be looking to avenge a Friday night loss that saw the team cough up a late lead thanks to some shaky bullpen work late in the contest.
