Cubs Fall to Reds as Darvish Surrenders 3 Home Runs

Darvish gave up four total runs in the game, taking the loss for the North Siders

Yu Darvish gave up three home runs, and Trevor Bauer struck out 11 Chicago Cubs batters as the Cincinnati Reds picked up a 5-2 victory at Great American Ballpark on Friday night.

Joey Votto, Eugenio Suárez, and Aristides Aquino all hit home runs for the Reds, who evened up the series at one win apiece with their victory. Bauer scattered three hits in picking up the win, with his lone blemish coming on a solo home run by Nicholas Castellanos in the first inning.

Anthony Rizzo drove in the other run of the game for the Cubs after being hit with a pitch with the bases loaded in the eighth inning.

The game was a tale of missed opportunities for the Cubs, who let two big scoring chances go by the wayside. In the fourth inning, the Cubs had runners on first and third with nobody out, but were unable to score. Kris Bryant was thrown out at home on a fielder’s choice, and after Ian Happ popped out to third base Kyle Schwarber popped out to shortstop, short-circuiting a potential rally.

In the eighth inning, the Cubs loaded up the bases with no outs, but after Rizzo drove in a run with his hit-by-pitch, the rally once again fizzled. Javier Báez grounded into another fielder’s choice, with Castellanos being thrown out at the plate. Happ then struck out on three pitches, and Schwarber grounded out on the first pitch he saw to end the potential threat.

Meanwhile, the Reds punished Darvish for mistakes all night long, hitting three home runs total. Aquino blasted a home run to right field in the second inning to give the Reds the lead, and after the Cubs squandered a scoring chance in the fourth, Suárez homered to left field in the bottom of the frame to extend the Cincinnati advantage.

After the loss, the Cubs will look to take back control of the four-game set on Saturday night when they face Sonny Gray. Kyle Hendricks will take the mound for the Cubs, with the game set for 6:10 p.m.
