Ian Happ Hits Grand Slam as Cubs Blow Out A's

Kyle Schwarber hit a three-run home run to help the Cubs to their fifth win in six games

Ian Happ blasted a grand slam, and Kyle Schwarber hit his 26th home run of the season as the Chicago Cubs blew out the Oakland A’s at Wrigley Field on Wednesday afternoon.

Schwarber drove in three runs, and Javier Báez picked up a pair of RBIs in the game to help the Cubs finish off a 5-1 homestand. Victor Caratini added his sixth home run of the season in the winning effort.

José Quintana had a splendid outing, giving up just two hits and one earned run in seven innings. He also struck out seven batters to earn the win in the blowout effort.

It took a while for either team to get on the board, with Matt Olson finally breaking the tie with a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning to give the A’s the lead. It was short-lived, however, as the Cubs put up a five-spot in the fourth inning to take the lead for good.

Báez singled to right field to score Kris Bryant and tie the game, and then Happ blasted a grand slam to center field, giving the Cubs a 5-1 lead.

The Cubs continue to pour on the offense in the fifth inning, with Báez picking up another RBI single to make it a 6-1 game. Schwarber then stepped to the plate and smacked an opposite field three run home run to blow the game wide open.

From there, Quintana and the Cubs’ bullpen cruised, giving the team a much-needed victory after a blowout loss on Tuesday night.

The Cubs will now hit the road for a 10-game road trip starting on Thursday night against the Cincinnati Reds at the Great American Ballpark. Cole Hamels will take the ball against Alex Wood, with first pitch scheduled for 6:10 p.m.
