The next phase of the Chicago Transit Authority's Wilson station set to begin early next month will slow the commutes of Purple Line commuters while work is done on the tracks.
Beginning March 9 and lasting about one year, Purple Line trains will share the tracks used by Red Line trains between the Lawrence and Belmont stations. That change means Purple Line trains, which normally run express from Howard to Belmont, will make additional stops at the Wilson, Sheridan, and Addison stations until the work is completed, the transit agency said.
Commuters should plan on adding an additional four to six minutes to their travel.
Red and Purple Line riders heading north won't be affected by the work as those trains use separate tracks.
The $203 million project to upgrade the entire Wilson station was announced last year. In addition to signal and track work, plans include adding a glass and steel canopy, a glass-enclosed entrance, and a second entrance with access to nearby retail.
Once the work is complete, Wilson will also become a new transfer point between the Red and Purple lines.
