Broken Water Pipe Limits Access to CTA Red Line Station

Freezing ice on the mezzanine shut down access to northbound trains at a Chicago Transit Authority Red Line station on the city's north side.

Northbound Red Line trains began bypassing the Chicago/State station about 4 a.m. after a busted water pipe caused freezing ice to render the mezzanine too hazardous to allow customers to get on or off the train on that side of the tracks, said CTA spokesperson Steve Mayberry.

Southbound Red Line trains are still stopping at the station while CTA personnel were on the scene spreading salt and sand, Mayberry said.

Customers traveling northbound to Chicago/State were advised to continue to the Clark/Division station, then proceed southbound, one stop back to Chicago/State, Mayberry said.
