CTA Extends Students' Discounted Rates for Longer School Day

To accommodate Chicago Public Schools' longer day, the CTA has agreed to extend students' discounted public transportation rates during the school year.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel and CTA president Forrest Claypool announced Monday the reduced fare for an extra 30 minutes each day. Schools chief Jean-Claude Brizard said the extension ensures students won't have to pick between after-school activities and cheaper CTA fees.

“This change by the CTA is an important one that continues supporting our students with the full school day,” Brizard said in a statement.

Elementary and high school students can ride for a reduced rate on buses and trains between 5:30 a.m. and 8:30 p.m. The rate, which went into effect Aug. 13, previously was valid between 5:30 p.m. and 8 p.m.

Students must present a valid CTA Student Riding Permit to board at the reduced rate on weekdays through Friday, June 28, 2013. Students can receive reduced rate fare cards by contacting their school or calling 312-932-2923.

The CTA provided about 25 million rides to students at a reduced rate in 2011, according to the mayor's office.
