Crash Jams Northbound I-294 During Morning Rush Hour

A multi-vehicle crash shut down all northbound lanes of Interstate 294 early Tuesday, snarling traffic during the morning rush hour.

The crash took place before 6 a.m. on the Tri-State Tollway just before Oakton Street. It shut down lanes between Oakton and Touhy Avenue, with solid stop-and-go traffic stretching south to Lawrence Avenue.

NBC Sky 5 footage over the scene showed several vehicles involved in the crash, including a semi-truck carrying cars. The two center lanes reopened at around 6:30 a.m., though the slowdown was expected to continue through the morning rush.

It was not immediately clear what caused the crash. Illinois State Police responded to and remained on the scene early Tuesday as the investigation continued.
