With a teacher's strike set for September 10, thousands of student athletes may not get to compete.
Chicago Public Schools officials are seeking a waiver that would allow students to play even if the strike goes forward, but CTU officials have instructed coaches who are members of the union not to coach during a strike.
CPS chief of staff Robert Boik sent a letter to IHSA executive director Marty Hickman to see if there's a way for sports programs to continue in the event of a teacher walkout.
"We would like to know whether there are any administrative options, including any requests for exceptions or waivers, from the limitations on participation or the forfeiture of games," the letter reads.
Boik said its their understanding that teams can practice during a strike if the proper (credentialed) coaching staff is in place.
Since 90 percent of credentialed coaches are members of the Chicago Teacher's Union, CPS is seeking an exception that would allow students to participate in sports in the event of a strike.
