Expectant Mom Goes Into Labor on Dan Ryan Expressway

A newborn baby boy was delivered on the side of a Chicago road early Monday morning.

Authorities say the expectant mother and father-to-be were on their way to the hospital around 2 a.m. when suddenly her labor kicked into high-gear.

The father, Marshall Rambert, told NBC 5 they were on the Dan Ryan Expressway on their way to UIC Medical Center when it became clear his wife couldn’t wait any longer.

“Her contractions started speeding up and then the next thing you know, about 10 minutes in on the expressway, the baby came out,” Rambert said. “I was shocked.”

He quickly exited the expressway and pulled their SUV off to the side of the road near West 43rd and South Dearborn Streets, about six miles south of the West Side hospital, where their baby was born.

"I'm just hoping I don't hit nobody," Rambert said. "That's my main thing. Because she's screaming. The baby's screaming. I screamed."

The mother, Tenisha Wilkins, said the birthing process began before her husband could even park the car.

"You just never think that it's gonna be you delivering your baby on the way to the hospital," Wilkins said. "But it was me."

Their third child, who has been named Miller Rambert, came into the world at 6 pounds, 11 ounces.

"I have been through labor before and I thought we were okay and on time and then all of the sudden, the contractions were coming faster and faster and I knew, 'I'm not gonna make it,'" Wilkins said.

Marshall Rambert and his wife managed to keep the healthy baby warm until ambulances arrived on the scene to transport both the mother and baby to the hospital.

Both the baby and mother were resting comfortably at Mercy Hospital and Medical Center Monday morning before the couple plans to bring home the family’s new addition to meet his two older siblings.
