Police Search for Man Accused in String of Carjackings, Fatal Crash

Authorities said Rockie Douglas, 34, is wanted in connection with three vehicular hijackings as well as a number of robberies and criminal incidents from Chicago to Wisconsin

Chicago police on Monday continued their search for a man suspected in a string of carjackings, including one that lead to a crash that killed an 11-year-old boy over the weekend.

Authorities said Rockie Douglas, 34, is wanted in connection with three vehicular hijackings as well as a number of robberies and criminal incidents from Chicago to Wisconsin.

They said Douglas was the driver of a stolen green minivan that collided with a Chevy suburban at the intersection of 55th and Halsted Streets at about 12:30 p.m. Saturday. An 11-year-old boy, Donovan Turnage, was thrown from the vehicle and was hospitalized in critical condition at University of Chicago Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, officials said.

An adult male, who was also in the Chevy suburban, was also transported to University of Chicago Hospital. Officials said he is expected to survive.

The suspect raced from the scene to a nearby gas station where he stole a second vehicle, according to authorities.

“He showed a gun and he told me verbally that he had a gun and he jumped in my truck,” said Clinton Banks, whose car was stolen by the offender. “I was just worried about trying to get back to work. I didn’t want him to take my truck in spite of the fact that he had a gun.”

Authorities described Douglas as a white man who stands 6 feet, 3 inches tall and weighs about 275 pounds. His last listed address is in the 12700 block of Major Avenue in Beach Park. Police believe he is driving a light blue, 2007, 4-door Honda Accord with Illinois license plate no. X144777.

In at least one of the carjackings, Douglas displayed a blue steel handgun, according to authorities.

Anyone encountering Douglas, who is described as "dangerous," should use caution and dial 911 or contact Area Central Detectives at 312-747- 8380 or Illinois State Police at 630-241-6800.
