Cops: 1-Year-Old Boy Wounded in Accidental Shooting

A 1-year-old boy was accidentally shot in the head Thursday morning in south suburban Riverdale, police said.

The shooting happened in an apartment in the 100 block of East 146th Street, police said in a news release. The boy suffered a single gunshot wound to the head and a weapon was recovered from the scene, police said. Detectives are interviewing the people involved who are cooperating, police said.

The boys cousins were apparently playing with a gun in the third-floor apartment.

"They was tuggin' or playing over a gun and they shot the baby," said neighbor Brianna Lumpkins.

Cellphone video captured the critical moments after the boy was shot by a young family member.

"As (the) baby (is) bleeding, he's stilling crying. Still alive." said Laurie Baker, a witness. "Everyboyd was just crying and yelling." 

A neighbor rused to help the boy get to an ambulance.

The child is in critical condition at Christ Hospital.
