COPA Releases Video of Off-Duty Cop Firing Shots at Would-Be Robber

An off-duty Chicago police officer fired shots at a would-be robber

Chilling video has been released of an incident involving an off-duty Chicago police officer who traded shots with a robbery suspect on the city’s Far South Side.

The video from the June 9 incident was released by the Civilian Office of Police Accountability, and shows an off-duty officer involved in a shootout outside of his home.

During the incident, suspects in a white SUV tried to rob a woman near the intersection of 107th Street and Morgan. After the attempted robbery, the off-duty officer pulled out his weapon and exchanged gunshots with the suspects, who fled the scene.

“I was shocked. I have never heard that before,” an eyewitness said of the shooting.

Doorbell camera footage from the home shows the shooting, while another doorbell camera from down the street captures the suspects fleeing the scene.

“It’s always been a pleasant neighborhood,” neighbor Derrick Thompson said. “People keep up their properties and manicure their lawns.”

COPA is continuing to investigate the shooting, and no suspects are in custody in connection with the case.
