Off-Duty Cop, Landscaper Chase Down DUI Suspect

William McCann died Wednesday after being struck by car in the 2700 block of North Kedzie Avenue

An off-duty cop and a landscaper chased down an allegedly intoxicated driver this week who fled the scene of a fatal hit and run in Logan Square.

Ogden District Police Officer Zachary Cuatchon, 30, and landscaper Adalberto Aceves, 39, gave chase Wednesday after watching Saul Chavez run over and drag a 66-year-old insurance broker, the Chicago Sun-Times reports.

Chavez, 35, hit William McCann while he was crossing the street at the 2700 block of North Kedzie. McCann hit the windshield of Chavez's Dodge Neon and when the driver hit the breaks McCann fell to the ground. Chavez continued on, running over McCann and dragging him 150 feet police said.

Aceves was driving behind Chavez when he struck McCain and used his mini-van to cut off Chavez. Chavez took off running and Aceves, seeing he couldn't help McCann, ran after him.

Cuatchon saw the incident too and helped Aceves chase Chavez down cornering him in an alley and handcuffing him.

Chavez has been charged with two felonies, aggravated DUI and leaving the scene of an accident involving injury or death.
