Cook County Inmate Arrested for Attacking Lawyer During Jail Visit: Police

Smith was still in handcuffs at the time of the attack, police said

An inmate was arrested Wednesday after allegedly attacking an attorney visiting the Cook County Jail.

At around 2 p.m., police said Jimmie Smith, 39, attacked one of his two public defenders while he was still in handcuffs.

The wounded attorney was taken to a local hospital to be treated for what appeared to be non-life threatening injuries, according to police.

At the time of the incident Smith was being held without bond in Division 9 of the jail on charges of aggravated kidnapping, two counts of aggravated criminal sexual assault and two counts of bringing contraband into a penal institution, police report.

Cook County Sheriff Thomas J. Dart said additional significant charges against Smith are pending.

The sheriff's office is investigating.
