Mayor Rahm Emanuel joined actor Robert De Niro and city officials Monday to break ground on a new high-end hotel in Chicago’s West Loop.
Nobu Hotel is slated to open in late 2017 with more than 100 rooms atop a 10,000-square-foot Nobu restaurant on the building’s ground floor, according to a news release from the City of Chicago.
The project will create approximately 200 construction jobs and 100 permanent jobs upon the hotel’s opening, city officials said.
De Niro is one of Nobu’s co-owners, named after celebrity chef Nobu Matsuhisa. The hotspot already has locations in New York, Malibu, Dallas and San Diego.
Located near Chicago Transit Authority’s Morgan Station, it is just one of the additions to the booming West Loop. "This reminds me of the meat packing district in New York and the places in Brooklyn are much like here and that's the kind of place I want to be."
"I was told about this neighborhood and, from everyond I heard, it seemed like this is where we wanted to be," De Niro said.
Last week, fast-food giant McDonald’s announced it would be moving its headquarters from suburban Oak Brook to the neighborhood’s West Randolph Street by the spring of 2018.
