4 Injured in Near West Side Construction Accident

Emergency responders shortly after 9 a.m. were called to West Lake and North Canal streets for a report of a partial building collapse

Four iron workers were injured, three seriously, when a beam fell at a construction site on Chicago's Near West Side.

Emergency responders shortly after 9 a.m. were called to West Lake and North Canal streets for a report of a partial building collapse.

The Chicago Fire Department via Twitter said a beam fell on the northeast corner of the intersection. Assistant Deputy Fire Commissioner Mark Nielsen said the beam was about 20 feet in the air when it fell.

Three iron workers were standing on the beam when it collapsed, according to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

OSHA said it was not clear why the bolts on the beam did not work.

The three workers tied to the beam were injured in the fall and a fourth worker was hit by falling debris, OSHA said.

An EMS Plan 1, which summons five ambulances, was called. The injured were taken to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County, Northwestern Memorial Hospital and Rush University Medical Center.

The building is to be a 50-story structure but work in the particular area where the collapse happened was halted.

OSHA said it is working with Midwest Steel to determine the cause of the accident. The Director of Egineering and Administration at Midwest Steele, Inc. declined to comment on the incident, citing an ongoing investigation.
