Community Mourns 11-Year-Old Girl Killed by Stray Bullet

"I can't get her out of my head," said 11-year-old ShaRonda Jones, who was with Adams when the shooting death

Community members gathered Sunday, many of them outraged by the violence the led to the tragic death of 11-year-old Shamiya Adams, who was shot when a stray bullet came through the bedroom window of a west side Chicago home.

"I can't get her out of my head," said 11-year-old ShaRonda Jones, who was with Adams when the shooting death. "Everytime I try to go to sleep she just pops up in my head."

Adams was at a sleeover with friends in the 3900 block of West Gladys Avenue in the Garfield Park neighborhood when a stray bullet pierced the bedroom window and hit her in the head. Family members said the group of friends was circled around a pretend "campfire" and was about to make s'mores when the shooting occurred.

Investigators believe the bullet was shot from a vacant lot across the street from the home in an area plagued by gangs and violence.

Tommie Robinson asked members of First Baptist Congregational to come pray in the neighborhood to end the violence and met Adams during her visits.

"[Adams] was vibrants and energetic," said Robinson. "She loved coming to church."

"It just leaves a hole in your soul," said Rev. George Daniels. "You can't find words to explain such a tragedy."

Friends were angered by the shooting as many gathered for a Sunday vigil to remember their slain friend.

"I'm angry because she never did anything to anybody," said 11-year-old Nashaunti Baker. "She didn't deserve it."
