Highs in the mid-80s replace record-low April temperatures as showers and thunderstorms move into the Chicago area beginning Wednesday.
The Storm Prediction Center placed the area under a slight risk Wednesday for strong-to-severe storms. That could mean heavy rain, gusty winds, large hail and frequent lightning possible in the evening.
A wave of storms that moved west-to-east through Chicago Wednesday morning has since weakened, and NBC Chicago meteorologist Alicia Roman is tracking another line of activity that could surface later on.
Clouds are expected to break for partial sun in the afternoon, and temperatures could gradually warm all the way to the mid-80s and possibly low 90s south of Chicago.
A few thunderstorms could re-develop and become severe later Wednesday afternoon, and scattered showers and storms are possible overnight with a slight risk of severe storms.
Keep your rain gear handy as showers threaten Thursday and Friday.
Highs continue through the end of the week with temperatures reaching the mid-80s on Thursday and upper 70s Friday.
Weekend showers also are likely along with a dip in temperatures.
