A freshman student at Southern University originally from northwest Indiana was killed in a shooting early Sunday in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
Annette January, 19, of Gary, Indiana, was a freshman student-athlete on the Track and Field team at Southern University. She graduated from Thea Bowman Leadership Academy in Gary in 2015.
The shooting occurred around 2 a.m. at an apartment complex near the campus of Louisiana State University, police confirmed.
January, and another student, 19-year-old Lashuntae Benton, of Lake Charles, Louisiana, were killed, according to Southern University President Ray L. Belton. Benton was a student athletic trainer. A third victim, a 24-year-old man, was also shot but expected to survive.
Authorities continue to investigate, and no one is in custody.
