When Will Colder Weather Hit Chicago?

We have been dealing with a very mild and quiet November so far. Temperatures have been around ten degrees above normal for the month so far, but there is still a lot of November left. The question is when will the cold air reach us?

Air circulates around the globe from west to east in the Northern Hemisphere and a couple of days ago Japan had a record amount of snow for this early in November. Japan’s distance from the North Pole is roughly the same as Chicago. We have been so warm, but the cold air has slipped south over near Japan.

This is associated with a jet streak that will make its way toward North America over the next week. As the jet streak comes on shore here in the United States it rides over the ridge of the West Coast and then pulls the colder air from Canada down toward Chicago late next week. So, could we get our first taste of cold air late next week? We will have to wait and watch if there are any changes in the timing or location of the jet stream between now and late next week.
