5-Foot Long Snake Considered 'Class 3 Dangerous'

Indiana Conservation Officers seized a five-foot long Egyptian Cobra from Elizabeth Zelms on Sunday. Conservation Officers received the information of Zelms possessing the "Class 3 Dangerous Reptile" without a permit.

Officers said they confirmed the woman was in possession of the cobra.

Conservation officers seized the cobra and issued Zelms a summons to appear in Lowell Town Court to face charges for the illegal possession of a reptile without a permit.

Indiana statute prohibits a person from possessing a dangerous reptile without a permit. There are several requirements of a person who obtains a Class 3 wild animal permit.

Such an animal is defined as one "which presents a real or potential threat to human safety." Local municipalities may have additional regulations restricting the possession of dangerous animals in their jurisdictions.

Zelm advised officers she rescued the cobra from someone else who could no longer care properly for the reptile.
