Poignant, moving messages of Cmdr. Paul Bauer's selfless service to the city of Chicago and his enormous love for his wife, daughter and police family shown through as hundreds packed the fallen commander's funeral service on Saturday.
Hear funeral remarks given by Supt. Eddie Johnson, Mayor Rahm Emanuel, Gov. Bruce Rauner, Cpt. Mel Roman and First Deputy Superintendent John Escalante.
Cpt. Mel Roman: "Cmdr. Bauer was not defined by his rank. He was a police officer just like the rest of us. Four days ago we stumbled, we took a bad stumble. But we didn’t fall, we didn’t break."
First Deputy Supt. John Escalante: "He never ever wanted to be the center of attention. He actually skipped out on his own promotion ceremony to command."
Supt. Eddie Johnson: "Paul, I’m going to miss you. I know you’re looking down on us all, and while there are no words I can say to describe the depth of my gratitude, I just want to say thank you."
Mayor Rahm Emanuel: "Paul’s highest purpose in life was Erin and Grace, because for Paul no title ever outranked husband and father."
Gov. Bruce Rauner: "Today, all of us our blue. We are blue in part because we are sad, we are broken-hearted to lose such a heroic man. But more importantly we are blue because we are proud. We are proud of the courage and the honor and the integrity of our police officers."
Fr. Dan Brandt: "I beg that you remember Paul Bauer not by the way he died, but rather by the way he lived."
