Climbers anxious to get their hands (and feet) on the new Malkin-Sacks Rock Climbing Walls at Maggie Daley Park can scale the structures starting Tuesday, the mayor's office announced.
The newest feature of the park is 40 feet tall and covers a total surface area of 19,000 square feet. The walls are divided into levels of expertise. Between 25 and 100 climbers can use them at once.
Prices depend on the type of rock climbing activity, but all first-time participants must attend a certification class. Visitors have the option of bouldering, top-rope and lead-harnessed climbing.
Bouldering certification costs $15 and climbing certification costs $29, according to the park district. Repeat visitors can climb for $7 a day if they bring their own equipment or $55 a month. Group prices also are available.
Equipment is available to rent for $15.
The 20-acre Maggie Daley Park, named after Chicago's former first lady, is located in north Grant Park near Columbus Drive, Randolph Street, Monroe Street and Lake Shore Drive. When the construction project is complete, the park will have a play garden in addition to the skating ribbon and climbing walls.
