The City Council’s Zoning Committee signed off on a plan to revitalize what they call the “carnival atmosphere” of Chicago’s Navy Pier in an attempt to transform the iconic spot into a top, year-round destination.
It's already the state's number one tourist attraction, but critics complain it's outdated and underutilized, especially during the off-season. That could be about to change, if Navy Pier officials can secure funding.
Renderings show a modern, sleek version of what officials have in mind.
The newly approved pplan includes the additions of a unique 7-story hotel, an elevated walkway that juts out over Lake Michigan, a reflecting pool, a seasonal ice rink, and a 4,000 square foot café as well as new retail shops.
Navy Pier Proposes Upgrades for Attraction
Navy Pier’s improvements will begin on the south dock with the hotel, the plans show, but the rest of the renovations will depend on the generosity of private donors.
Provided funding is secured, the focus will then shift to revamping the pier’s east end with the elevated lake overlook.

A new park at Navy Pier’s entrance was paid for by a $20 million donation from the Polk Brothers Foundation. Navy Pier officials the donation will pave way for more contributions to complete the overhaul, which is expected to boost attendance to the iconic attraction.
