Child's Foot Struck by Train on South Side

The incident occurred near 87th and Dauphin

A child was taken to an area hospital with a serious injury after being struck by a train on Wednesday afternoon.

According to the Chicago Police Department, an 11-year-old boy’s foot was struck at approximately 3:18 p.m. near the intersection of 87th and Dauphin when he tried to retrieve a football from the train tracks.

The boy was taken to Comer Children’s Hospital, where he is in serious but stable condition, according to authorities.

Originally, Metra officials said the train was a Canadian National freight train, but CN said they had no record of a train passing through the area around the time of the incident. The railroad also said that the track near the site of the incident is grade separated, with the railroad on an embankment.

Metra officials also revised their account of the incident, saying it was unclear which tracks the incident occurred on.

Metra said that Metra Electric Line trains in the area are operated at reduced speeds.
