Child Dies After Vehicles Strike Pedestrians, Crossing Guard Outside Indiana School

NBC News

A two-vehicle crash killed a 7- year-old child and left two other pedestrians critically injured in front of a school on Indianapolis’ east side Tuesday, police said.

The crash occurred about 4 p.m. Tuesday in front of George W. Julian School in the Irvington neighborhood moments after students were released from school for the day, police said.

Two adults and the child were taken to hospitals in critical condition. The child died shortly after arriving, police later said.

One of the adults was a crossing guard, police said.

The drivers of the cars stayed at the scene and were cooperating with the investigation, police said.

The child was a student at the school, Officer William Young of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department said.

“The Washington Street corridor is a heavily traveled area with lots of folks going home or getting off work,” Young said.

Angela Braun, who lives near the crash, said speeding is a “huge” problem in the area.

“The posting says no more than 35 miles per hour down here, but you’ve got people going 50 to 55,” she told The Indianapolis Star. Police did not say whether speed was a factor in the crash.
