Chicago Woman Charged in Wrong-Way Lake Shore Drive Crash

DUI charges for Lake Shore Drive wrong-way crash

A 29-year-old woman faces drunk driving charges in connection with a wrong-way crash on Lake Shore Drive that injured herself and two others.

Police say Carneris Wiggins, of the 2000 block of West 111th Street, drove her Nissan north in the southbound lanes early Thursday and collided with a Toyota Corolla near Roosevelt Road. The Nissan also crashed into a van after hitting the Corolla.

Wiggins suffered a broken pelvis and fractured clavicle. One of the two people in the Toyota Corolla car needed surgery to repair facial fractures. The driver of the van refused medical attention at the scene.

Wiggins was charged with felony aggravated driving under the influence and causing an accident and bodily harm.

Police also cited her for driving the wrong way on a one-way street, not slowing down, operating her car without insurance, and failing to carry her driver's license.

The crash was the third wrong-way crash in the Chicago area in the last week. Last Friday two people were injured when a driver went the wrong way of I-55 and crashed head-on just south of Thursday's accident on the curve toward Lake Shore Drive.

On Monday a driver reportedly intentionally went the wrong way on I-80 and crashed into an oncoming car, killing himself, two of his passengers and another driver.
