White Sox ‘Speed Pitch' Contest Goes to Sudden Death

The winning hurler topped out at 76 MPH on the radar gun

What to Know

  • The winner of the contest received an all-inclusive trip to Arizona for White Sox spring training.
  • Nine runners-up received tickets to the team's home opener at Guaranteed Rate Field.

Chicago White Sox fans lined up to show their stuff in a speed-pitching contest, and it took a “pitch-off” to determine the grand prize winner.

The contest, which coincided with the team putting single-game tickets on sale, saw 100 individuals try to light up the radar gun at Guaranteed Rate Field, and despite the frigid conditions, two men stood out among the field.

Park Ridge’s Tom Petermann, who threw 76 MPH to get into a sudden death pitch-off, ended up winning the grand prize, hitting 73 MPH in the showdown with Andy Gertonson, the team said in a press release.

Petermann’s strong arm won him an all-expenses VIP trip to Glendale, Arizona for a two-night stay. Petermann will also get two tickets to a White Sox spring training game of his choice, the team said.

Gertonson did not go home empty handed, however. He, and eight other finalists, won tickets to the team’s home opener at Guaranteed Rate Field on April 4.

The other 90 contestants all won ticket vouchers good for select home games at the ballpark this season.

Unfortunately, no one claimed the secret bonus prize, which would have gone to a hurler who couild crack 93 MPH.
