White Sox 1B Jose Abreu, Cubs 2B Javier Baez Win Silver Slugger Awards

Abreu won the trophy for the second time, and Baez is a first-time winner

A pair of Chicago stars have received one of baseball’s highest honors, as Chicago White Sox first baseman Jose Abreu and Chicago Cubs second baseman Javier Baez have been named as winners of the league’s Silver Slugger Awards.

Abreu, who captured the award among American League first basemen, hit 22 home runs and drove in 78 RBI this season, and won the prize for the second time in his big league career. Abreu also captured the trophy after the 2014 season.

Baez, who is also a finalist for the National League MVP award, was selected as the winner of the Silver Slugger award among N.L. second basemen. Baez hit 34 home runs and drove in a league high 111 RBI for the Cubs, and won the award for the first time in his career.

The Boston Red Sox and Colorado Rockies dominated the awards, accounting for six total victories. J.D. Martinez won the award for both A.L. outfielders and designated hitters, and Mookie Betts captured the prize in another outfields pot.

For the Rockies, shortstop Trevor Story and third baseman Nolan Arenado both won, as did pitcher German Marquez.
