3 Dead, at Least 19 Wounded in Weekend Shootings

Three people are dead, and at least 19 more have been wounded in shootings across the city of Chicago this weekend. 

In the city’s most recent fatal shooting, a 23-year-old man was shot in the chest while standing in the 5500 block of West Haddon Avenue, police said.

According to authorities, a man wearing all black clothing opened fire from an alley, striking two men. The 23-year-old man was transported to West Suburban, where he later died. A 19-year-old man was shot in the torso and was taken to Stroger in good condition, police said.

On Sunday morning, two people were shot in the 3000 block of West Jackson at approximately 3:30 a.m., according to police. One of the victims, a 32-year-old man, was shot in the neck and back and was later pronounced dead at Mount Sinai.

Another man, a 33-year-old, was taken to Mount Sinai in good condition with a gunshot wound to his arm.

He told police that the duo was being followed by a vehicle, and one of the occupants opened fire, striking both men.

No one is in custody in connection with the shooting.

The weekend’s first fatal shooting occurred in the 9300 block of South Luella at approximately 7:30 p.m. Friday night, police said. A 40-year-old man was standing at the location when multiple offenders walked up to him and opened fire, striking him multiple times.

He was pronounced dead at the scene, and no suspect is in custody.

Just after 12:30 a.m. Sunday, a 22-year-old man was involved in an altercation with several other men, and one of them pulled a gun and opened fire, striking him in the chest, leg, and neck, according to police.

The man was taken to Christ Hospital in critical condition.

Here are the rest of the weekend's shootings. 

Friday:

  • A 23-year-old man walked into an establishment and asked for a lighter, and after a verbal altercation, a man shot him in the leg, police said. The incident occurred in the 8200 block of Cottage Grove at approximately 6:22 p.m., and the gunman was an African-American wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt with white stripes on his sleeves. The victim was taken to Jackson Park Hospital in good condition.
  • Just before midnight in the 100 block of North Mayfield, a 29-year-old man got into an argument with another man and was shot in the knee. The victim was taken to West Suburban in stable condition.

Saturday:

  • Two men were shot in the 1400 block of South Millard at approximately 1:27 a.m., police said. One man, a 36-year-old, was shot nine times in the torso, and was taken to Mount Sinai in critical condition. Another man was shot three times in the leg and was also taken to Mount Sinai in serious condition.
  • A 41-year-old man was discovered with a gunshot wound to his head in the 200 block of West 95th Street, police said. The man was found inside of a car that has crashed into a median in the area. He was taken to Christ Hospital in critical condition.
  • A 47-year-old man walked into an establishment in the 5400 block of West Chicago at approximately 6:22 a.m. and was shot by another man, police said. The victim was taken to Mount Sinai in critical condition with gunshot wounds to his neck and legs.
  • In the 2700 block of West 25th Street, a 62-year-old man was barbecuing when a man fired shots with a black semi-automatic handgun, striking him in the right knee. He was taken to Mount Sinai in good condition, police said.
  • A 25-year-old man was shot in the arm while standing on the sidewalk in the 3200 block of West 55th Street at approximately 6:41 p.m., police said. The man was taken to Mount Sinai in good condition.
  • In the 5300 block of South Cottage Grove Avenue at approximately 7 p.m., a 20-year-old man was standing on a sidewalk when he was shot in the groin. He was taken to Mercy Hospital in stable condition.

Sunday:

  • A 37-year-old man was shot in the leg while sitting in a vehicle in the 9000 block of South May, police said. At approximately 12:19 a.m., a man appeared in a gangway and opened fire, striking the victim. He was taken to Christ Hospital in fair condition.
  • In the 5400 block of South Prairie at approximately 12:43 a.m., a 39-year-old man was crossing the street when he heard shots and realized he’d been shot twice in the leg. He was taken to University of Chicago in serious condition, according to police.
  • A 22-year-old man was shot in the 4400 block of South Lavergne at approximately 1:27 a.m., police said. The man was at a gathering when another man shot him, then escaped in a nearby vehicle. The man was in stable condition at Mount Sinai with gunshot wounds to his groin and backside.
  • A 37-year-old man was in the 1500 block of North Milwaukee when he was shot in the leg while leaving an establishment. The shot came from a large altercation in the street, and the victim was taken to Stroger Hospital in stable condition, according to police.
  • In the 800 block of East 89th Street, a 30-year-old man was on a sidewalk around 6:30 p.m. when a passenger in a black SUV fired shots at him, striking him in the neck and left arm. The victim was taken to University of Chicago in critical condition, according to police.
  • At approximately 8:30 p.m., a 63-year-old man was inside of an abandoned house in the 2000 block of West 70th Place when another man, who pulled out a gun and shot him in the left leg and groin. He was taken to Christ Hospital in stable condition, police said.
