3 Dead, at Least 22 Wounded in Weekend Gun Violence

Three people are dead and at least 22 others have been wounded in shootings across the city of Chicago this weekend.

42-year-old business owner Derrick Gholston was standing outside of a barber shop in the first block of East 112^th Place on Saturday evening when two men robbed him at gunpoint, according to police. After he complied with the gunmen, they entered the business and tried to rob the occupants as well.

Gholston, who had a concealed carry permit, pulled out a gun and engaged the suspects in a gunfight. He was shot in the altercation, and was later pronounced dead. An 18-year-old suspect in the robbery was also shot, and he too was pronounced dead.

A 51-year-old man inside the barber shop was shot in the leg, and was listed in stable condition at Stroger Hospital.

Just before 6 p.m. Sunday in the 8300 block of South Maryland, a 21-year-old man was in a vehicle when a person walked up to the car and fired shots, striking the victim in the head, face, shoulder, and hip, according to police.

The man was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Area South Detectives are investigating the shooting, and no suspects are in custody.

Just three hours later, another man was shot and killed in the 12100 block of South Loomis, according to police. Police responding to a ShotSpotter alert found a 54-year-old man with a gunshot wound to his head. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say the man was standing in a garage when an unknown assailant walked up to him and opened fire.

Friday –

• At approximately 2:10 p.m. in the 2400 block of West 73^rd Street, a 29-year-old man was on a sidewalk when a person walked up to him and opened fire, striking him in the ankle, police said. The man was taken to Holy Cross Hospital in stable condition.
• A 15-year-old boy was standing in the 4100 block of South California at approximately 2:19 p.m. when a man walked up to him and fired shots, striking him in the back. The boy is in serious but stable condition, according to police.
• In the 4300 block of South Washtenaw at approximately 2:29 p.m., a 17-year-old boy was shot in the thigh, according to police. No further details were available, and the boy was taken to Mount Sinai in good condition.
• At approximately 4:44 p.m. in the 12400 block of South Parnell, a 41-year-old man was standing in an alley when a dark colored vehicle approached and a person inside opened fire, police said. The man was shot in the arm, and is listed in stable condition at Christ Hospital.
• A 24-year-old man was in a car when he was hit by gunfire in the 700 block of West 100^th Street, police said. The man was hit twice in the shoulder and is in stable condition at Christ Hospital.
• In the 7600 block of South Drexel at approximately 8:36 p.m., a 23-year-old woman was inside of a residence when gunfire from outside the home struck her in the leg, police said. The woman was taken to Stroger, where she was listed in stable condition.
• Just before 9 p.m. in the 3900 block of West Arthington, three people were standing on a sidewalk when they were shot. Two 14-year-old boys were listed in stable condition at Stroger, and a 39-year-old man was also listed in stable condition after being shot in the right leg, police said.
• A 33-year-old man was standing on a sidewalk in the 6200 block of South Seeley just after 10 p.m. when he heard shots and felt pain in his back, police said. The man is in critical condition at Christ Hospital.
• In the 6200 block of South Yale at approximately 11:45 p.m., a 28-year-old man was walking on a sidewalk when he was shot in the back. A resident drove him to St. Bernards, and he’s in stable condition according to police.

Saturday –

• Just after midnight in the 5400 block of South Laflin, a 21-year-old woman was standing on the street when a person in a passing vehicle fired shots at her, striking her in the right arm. Police say she’s in stable condition.
• At approximately 12:04 a.m. in the 4400 block of Ida B. Wells Drive, a 25-year-old woman was discovered sitting in her vehicle by police. The woman had suffered a gunshot wound to her face, and she’s in critical condition at Mount Sinai.
• Two people were standing on a sidewalk in the 2300 block of South Saint Louis at approximately 12:28 a.m. when a person in a dark-colored sedan fired shots. A 45-year-old woman was shot in the shoulder and is in stable condition, while a 23-year-old man was shot in the buttocks. He too is in stable condition, police said.
• At approximately 2:12 a.m., an 18-year-old man was standing on a sidewalk in the 2300 block of West 66^th Street when a person in a black SUV fired shots, grazing his head, police said. The man was in stable condition at Christ Hospital.
• In the 300 block of North Homan at approximately 2:50 p.m., an 18-year-old woman was in an alley when a man walked up to her and fired shots, striking her in the shoulder, police said. The woman was taken to Stroger Hospital in good condition.
• A 31-year-old man was standing in a gangway in the 400 block of West 117^th Street when he was shot in the chest and torso. Police say the man was taken to Christ Hospital in serious condition.
• Just before midnight in the 6700 block of South Loomis, a 14-year-old boy was walking with a group of teens when he was shot in the foot, police said. The boy was in stable condition at St. Bernards, according to police.

Sunday –

• A 24-year-old man was walking down an alley in the 8500 block of South Morgan at approximately 1:43 p.m. when he was shot, police said. The man said a person in a hoodie fired shots at him, and he was listed in stable condition at an area hospital.
• In the 200 block of West 94^th Street at approximately 8:37 p.m., a 29-year-old man was shot multiple times while standing on a sidewalk, police said. The man was taken to Christ Hospital in stable condition.
