4 Dead, at Least 43 Wounded in Weekend Shootings Across Chicago

The city's first fatal shooting occurred early Saturday morning

Nearly 50 people were shot, including an 8-year-old girl, in shootings that left at least four people dead across Chicago this weekend, according to authorities.

The city’s first fatal shooting occurred just before 2 a.m. Saturday in the 600 block of North Sawyer, according to police.

A 19-year-old man was standing on a sidewalk when a person opened fire, striking him in the right armpit, police said. The man was taken to Mount Sinai, where he was later pronounced dead.

Area North Detectives are investigating, and no one is in custody.

On Saturday night, another fatal shooting occurred in the 3300 block of West Chicago, according to police. At approximately 6:17 p.m., a 47-year-old man was sitting in a car when a man walked up to the vehicle and fired shots, striking him in the right arm and once near the left armpit. 

The man was taken to Mount Sinai, where he was later pronounced dead. 

Police do not have a suspect in custody, and Area North Detectives are investigating. 

Just before 11:30 p.m. Friday in the 7300 block of South Artesian, four people were standing on a sidewalk when a person in a passing vehicle opened fire, according to Chicago police.

One of the victims, a 24-year-old man, was shot in the back, and is in critical condition at Holy Cross Hospital, according to police. Three other victims, a 29-year-old man, a 23-year-old man, and a 20-year-old woman, are all in stable condition at local hospitals.

No suspect is in custody at this time, and Area Central Detectives are investigating the shooting.

Approximately two hours later in the 8600 block of South Exchange, a 29-year-old man was standing on a sidewalk with a group of people when two men approached and opened fire, striking him in the head, authorities said. 

The victim was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead. No one is in custody, and Area South Detectives are investigating the shooting, police said.

A short time later, a 16-year-old boy was riding in a car in the 3400 block of West 24th Street when a person on a sidewalk opened fire, striking him in the head, police said. The teen was taken to Mount Sinai in critical condition, but was later pronounced dead, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office. 

Here are the rest of the weekend’s shootings:

Friday –

  • A 19-year-old was shot in the stomach during a confrontation with another man on Friday afternoon, according to Chicago police. The incident occurred just after 4 p.m. in the 3400 block of North Cicero, and involved the 19-year-old and a 36-year-old man, who pulled out a gun and shot the teen during the scuffle. The victim is in stable condition at Illinois Masonic, and the 36-year-old man is in police custody.
  • Just before 6:30 p.m. in the 3300 block of West Cermak, police responded to a call of shots fired. There were no victims at the scene, but later two men, a 31-year-old and a 34-year-old man, drove themselves to Stroger Hospital. Both victims are in serious condition, police say, but no further details are available.
  • In the first block of East 114th Place at approximately 8:50 p.m., a 16-year-old boy was on a street when a witness heard gunshots, police said. The boy was shot in the left and right thighs, and was taken to Christ Hospital in stable condition.
  • A 40-year-old man was standing in the 7500 block of North Paulina when two men walked up to him and attempted to rob him. When the man fled, he was shot in the right hand, and was taken to an area hospital in stable condition, police said.
  • At approximately 11:28 p.m. in the 3600 block of West Douglas, a 14-year-old boy was standing in a park when he was shot in the right shoulder, police said. The boy was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he’s listed in stable condition.

Saturday –

  • In the 4200 block of West Van Buren at approximately 12:35 a.m., a 28-year-old man was standing on a sidewalk when he heard shots and felt pain in his left leg. Police say the man was taken to Loretto Hospital, but was later transferred to Stroger, where he’s listed in stable condition.
  • A 31-year-old man was walking in the 900 block of South Western at approximately 2 a.m. when he was shot in the legs, according to police. He was taken to Stroger Hospital in stable condition.
  • At approximately 2:40 a.m., a 27-year-old man was standing in the 3700 block of West Lake when he was shot in the left leg. The man was taken to Mount Sinai, where he’s listed in stable condition, police said.
  • Police say a woman suffered a graze wound to her calf after she was shot in the 4500 block of West West End at approximately 6:24 a.m. Police believe the shooting was a domestic incident, and the woman refused EMS treatment.
  • ShotSpotter alerted police to a shooting in the 8700 block of South Exchange at approximately 11:42 a.m., and when they arrived on scene they were stopped by a person driving a gunshot victim, a 25-year-old man. That man was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in critical condition, and no suspect is in custody.
  • Just before noon in the 2500 block of South Sawyer, a 34-year-old man was riding his bike when a person in a Black Nissan began firing shots at him, striking him multiple times, police said. The man was taken to Mount Sinai in serious-to-critical condition.
  • In the 2500 block of West Touhy at approximately 6:05 p.m., a 34-year-old man was on a sidewalk when a person in a passing vehicle fired shots at him, striking him in the arm. The man was taken to St. Francis in stable condition, according to police. 
  • A 43-year-old man was walking on the sidewalk in the 400 block of S. Ellis around 8:44 p.m., when police say he heard shots and then felt pain. He was self-transported to the hospital in stable condition with a gunshot wound to his right arm.
  • A 20-year-old man was standing on the sidewalk near the 600 block of S. Racine around 9 p.m. when an occupant in a vehicle fired shots. The victim was taken to Mt. Sinai in stable condition with a gunshot wound to the left arm.
  • Around 10:36 p.m. in the 5700 block of S. Aberdeen, police say a 42-year-old man and a 35-year-old man were taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in stable condition after the first victim was struck in the back and head and the second suffered a gunshot wound to the left leg.
  • At approximately 11:34 p.m. in the 5000 block of W. Huron, a 38-year-old man was standing on the sidewalk when a male offender approached on foot and fired shots. The victim was taken to West Sub in stable condition with a gunshot wound to his left leg.
  • A 30-year-old man was walking in the 4100 block of W. Congress around 11:36 p.m., when he heard shots and felt pain. He was transported in serious condition to Mt. Sinai after receiving a gunshot wound to his right leg and left hand.
Sunday –
  • In the 7100 block of S. Champlain around 12:09 a.m., police say a 29-year-old man was standing on the sidewalk when he heard shots and felt pain. He was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in stable condition with a gunshot wound to the right foot.
  • A 21-year-old man was standing on the sidewalk at around 1:15 a.m. when he told police two men approached on foot and took the victims' cell phone at gunpoint. The victim sustained a gunshot wound to the buttocks and was transported to Mt. Sinai in stable condition.
  • At about 2 a.m. in the 3000 block of W. 38th Pl. a 30-year-old man was exiting a vehicle when an occupant in a silver SUV reportedly fired shots. The victim was transported to Mt. Sinai in critical condition with a gunshot wound to the head.
  • Six people were standing on the street with a large group of people when an occupant in a light-colored sedan fired shots near the 3500 block of W. Lake at around 2:47 a.m. Five victims were taken in stable condition to nearby hospitals. A 25-year-old man was transported in critical condition with a gunshot wound to the back.
  • A 36-year-old man walked into Rush/Oak Park hospital with a gunshot wound to the right hand. The incident took place in the 100 block of N. Lacrosse at about 2:15 a.m.
  • In the 1200 block of N. Cleaver at approximately 3:53 a.m., a 23-year-old man was taken to Northwestern in stable condition after being shot in the left leg.
  • A 37-year-old man was transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center at around 4:09 a.m. after receiving a gunshot wound to the left side of his body in the 2900 block of S. Dearborn.
  • Officers observed two men firing into a group of people in the 200 block of W. 63rd St. at around 2:28 a.m. The officers discharged their weapons at the offenders without striking them. The offenders then fled on foot to the 6400 block of S. Yale and then entered a black SUV. A victim self-transported to Mercy hospital with a gunshot wound to his shoulder. Investigators are working to determine if he was shot by the initial exchange or by officers engaging the offender.
  • A man, 24, sustained a gunshot wound to the arm, chest and left side and was transported to Christ hospital in serious condition. Police report the victim was walking down the street when an unknown vehicle drove by and an occupant from the vehicle fired shots that struck the victim in the 1200 block of W. 82nd St. around 6:51 a.m.
  • In the 200 block of S. Keeler, a 21-year-old man was struck in the buttocks and forearm after a male offender approached him on foot fired shots that struck the vicitm at around 6:33 a.m. The vicitm was transported to Mt. Sinai in serious condition.
  • A 27-year-old man sustained a gunshot wound to his hand and self-transported to Stroger hospital in good condition. The incident took place in the 6800 block of S. Hamlin at approximately 11:14 a.m.
  • In the 1000 block of North Monticello at approximately 3:54 p.m., an 8-year-old girl was shot while attending a family barbecue, police said. A person in a blue Dodge Charger fired shots at the group, striking the girl in the leg. She was taken to Lurie Children's Hospital, where she's listed in good condition. 
  • Just after 6 p.m. in the 11500 block of South Yale, a 69-year-old man was standing in his yard when a 57-year-old acquaintance pulled out a gun and shot him in the stomach, hip, and thigh, police said. The victim was taken to Christ Hospital in stable condition, and the alleged gunman was taken into custody. 
  • A 29-year-old man was standing on a sidewalk in the 8500 block of South Marquette at approximately 8:25 p.m. when he was approached by a man who fired shots at him, police said. The man was struck in the leg, and is in stable condition at Trinity Hospital. 
  • Around 8:45 p.m., a 37-year-old man was sitting in a parked vehicle in the 8600 block of South Elizabeth when police say someone in a black SUV pulled up and opened fire. The man was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in stable condition. Police said he had wounds to the back and right leg. 
  • About the same time, a 30-year-old man was standing on the sidewalk in the 7600 block of South Stewart when a gunman in a silver SUV fired shots, striking him in the abdomen, police said. The man was taken to Unievrsity of Chicago Hospital in stable condition.
