Severe Thunderstorm Watch Issued for Areas West of Chicago

The National Weather Service has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch for areas west of Chicago, as severe weather is beginning to fire up.

Lee, Ogle, and Winnebago counties are all listed under the watch, which takes effect immediately and will last through 2 a.m. Sunday morning.

According to forecasts, there is an elevated risk of damaging winds if storms begin to fire, with gusts up to 60 MPH forecasted. There is also a limited risk of flooding, and the potential for quarter sized hail exists with the storms. 

Severe weather is possible for the Chicago area into the evening and overnight hours. NBC 5 Storm Team Meteorologist Pete Sack has the latest details. 

In addition to the storms, the potential for flash floods exists, and the areas west of Chicago have also been placed under a Flash Flood Watch. LaSalle, Lee, Ogle, and Winnebago counties are all impacted by the watch, which begins at 1 a.m. and will last through mid-morning Sunday. 

Finally, a Dense Fog Advisory has been issued for the city of Chicago. Visibility is expected to drop to less than a quarter mile, and areas closer to the lake could see visibility drop to less than 100 feet.
