Severe Storms Bring Hail, High Winds to Chicago Area – And More Storms Are Possible

Severe thunderstorms uprooted trees, dumped quarter-sized hail and brought wind gusts of up to 60 mph to parts of the Chicago area Thursday--and were expected to increase into the late night hours.

A Severe Thunderstorm Watch issued for DeKalb, LaSalle, Grundy, Kankakee, Kendall and Will counties in Illinois until 3 a.m. Friday. A Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Cook County and Lake County, Indiana, was expected to expire at 11:30 p.m. Thursday.

Tornado and Severe Thunderstorm Warnings popped up in several counties across the area as storms inched their way through beginning after 11:30 a.m. It remained unclear if a tornado in fact touched down, but there were reports of a potential touchdown near Sheridan, Illinois, according to the National Weather Service.

This system is expected to move south across the area heading into the afternoon and possibly into the evening commute, particularly for areas south of Chicago.

Scattered are expected to redevelop after 10:30 p.m. If that happens, these slow-moving storms have the potential to become severe, with large, golf ball-sized hail, damaging winds of up to 60 mph and heavy rain being the biggest threats.

This marks the start of what will likely be an active weather pattern heading into the weekend.

There is a chance for showers and thunderstorms Friday, Saturday and Sunday as highs remain in the mid and upper 70s.
