Chicago got a taste of some much-needed warmer weather over the weekend, but it appears things are about to change… again.
Monday started off mild with scattered showers and light rain through the morning. The damp conditions are expected to ease through the afternoon hours as temperatures gradually fall from the upper-40s and low-50s to the upper-teens and mid-20s overnight.
Highs will only rebound Tuesday into the upper-20s in northwest counties and the mid-30s for areas south and in northwest Indiana.
This would mean the evening hours could see an icy mix of freezing rain and sleet north of Interstate 80, possibly leaving anywhere from a tenth to a quarter of an inch of accumulation by dawn. This could lead to significant icing, which would create travel troubles and power issues.
Temperatures south of Interstate 80 will likely stay warm enough to keep the moisture as rain.
Wednesday is expected to dry up following the overnight rain and ice, but another round of freezing rain and sleet is expected by the evening hours, transitioning to all rain overnight.
Highs are forecast to sit in the mid- to upper-30s before climbing into the low-40s for Thursday.
