A round of showers and storms soaked the Chicago area overnight as several Chicago suburbs were left flooded from this week's stormy weather.
The National Weather Service issued a Flood Warning for Cook, Kane, Kendall, Lake and McHenry counties in Illinois as well as Kenosha County in Wisconsin. DeKalb, Kane, Lake and McHenry counties were also under a Flash Flood Warning, according to the NWS.
The warnings came after storms across the Chicago area, developing ahead of a slow-moving cold front that pushed into the region, brought both severe weather and relief from the heat and humidity that dominated the weather pattern over the work week.
The slow-moving nature of the storms caused already-saturated areas to become flooded.
Several parts of Lake County, particularly the Waukegan area, were left with high standing water. There, video showed residents and animals being rescued by firefighters from their homes, which were surrounded by several feet of water.
The National Weather Service estimated 1 to 3 inches of rain fell in a matter of hours across a large portion of north-central Illinois from Thursday night into Friday. From areas like Rockford through Poplar Grove and Harvard, anywhere from 3 to 5 inches fell, according to NWS.
Harvard police said much of the area was left flooded by the rain and storms.
In Lake in the Hills, Willow Road was closed between Hiawatha Drive and Council Trail due to the flooding. Authorities urged drivers to use alternate routes.
In Lake Forest, cars could be seen submerged under water near Deerpath and Route 14 and in Libertyville footage showed parking lots filled with water.
Looking ahead, after a round of morning showers, Friday looks to be breezy with sunny skies and cooler with high temperatures in the 70s.
