A technician with the city's Department of Water Management was convicted Friday of bribery, accused of paying off another city employee to remove code violations issued on property he owned, the Chicago Tribune reported.
Gustavo Ramirez faces between 3 and 7 years in prison for the crime.
Prosecutors had charged Ramirez with one count of felony bribery, contending that two years ago he paid an undercover investigator posing as a city inspector at least $200 to erase building violations on four properties. Ramirez thought the investigator was with Department of Buildings employee, prosecutors said.
He also allegedly offered to supply the undercover investigator with a special tool used to make illegal water hookups, the Chicago Sun-Times reported earlier this year.
A jury deliberated for eight hours before finding him guilty, the Chicago Tribune reported.
Ramirez lost his $51,228-per-year job after his arrest. He'll be sentenced Dec. 10.
