2 Dead, 15 Wounded in Chicago Weekend Shootings

Two men were killed and at least 15 other people have been wounded in shootings across Chicago since Friday evening.

More than 800 people have been shot in the city so far this year, according to Chicago Sun-Times data. At least 145 victims have died.

The most recent fatal shooting happened about 5 p.m. Saturday in the South Side Gresham neighborhood. An 18-year-old man was was shot in the chest in the 1200 block of West 81st Street when someone fired multiple times at him from inside a vehicle, according to Chicago Police. He was taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he died. The Cook County medical examiner’s office has not provided information on the fatality.

The weekend’s other homicide happened about 6:45 p.m. Friday in the Archer Heights neighborhood on the Southwest Side. Officers responding to a call of shots fired in the 4900 block of South Kostner learned 21-year-old Carlos Rosas had already taken himself to Mount Sinai Hospital, according to police and the medical examiner’s office. Rosas, who lived in the neighborhood, died of a gunshot wound to the chest at 7:12 p.m.

The most recent nonfatal shooting happened about 5:55 a.m. Sunday in the Ravenswood neighborhood on the Northwest Side. A 42-year-old man suffered multiple gunshot wounds to the chest in the 4800 block of North Rockwell Street, police said. He was taken to Illinois Masonic Medical Center, but additional details were not provided.

About four hours earlier, two men were wounded in separate shootings minutes apart early Sunday.

An 18-year-old was standing outside about 1:50 a.m. on the sidewalk in the 2700 block of West 22nd Place in the Little Village neighborhood on the Southwest Side, when gunfire erupted and he was shot in the left leg, police said. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where his condition was stabilized.

About 1:45 a.m., a 22-year-old man was shot and seriously wounded in the East Garfield Park neighborhood on the West Side. He was leaving a store in the 2700 block of West Madison Street when two males walked up, one of whom shot him three times in the chest, police said. The man was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was listed in serious condition. U.S. Rep. Danny Davis’ district office is located on the same block as the shooting.

At least 12 other people were wounded in shootings across the city between Friday evening and Sunday morning.

Twenty-four people were shot in the city last weekend, seven fatally.
