6 Killed, 36 Wounded in Weekend Violence Across Chicago

Six people have been killed and at least 36 wounded in shootings across the Chicago area since Friday night, according to police.

The first fatal shooting of the weekend occurred around 10:19 p.m. Friday night, according to police. Officers responded to a call of shots fired in the 8800 block of S. Eggleston, and when they arrived they found a man with gunshot wounds to the buttocks and his side. Later identified as 23-year-old Brendon Frazier, he was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police and the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office.

On Saturday night, an 18-year-old man was shot and killed in the 7100 block of South Artesian. Tayvion Roberson was shot in the back and chest, officials said, and was taken to Holy Cross Hospital where he was pronounced dead. A 59-year-old man was also injured in the shooting, according to police, and was taken to an area hospital in serious condition.

The third fatality of the weekend occurred around 2:06 a.m. Sunday on the city’s West Side. A 35-year-old man was sitting in a parked car in the 3600 block of W. Chicago Ave. when a male offender approached and opened fire. The victim suffered multiple gunshot wounds to the head and body and was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Further details, including his identity, were not immediately available.

Another deadly attack killed one man and wounded three others on the city’s Far South Side early Sunday. All four were in the 1500 block of E. 82nd St. around 5:15 a.m. when they were shot, according to police. Two of the men, ages 23 and 40, later arrived at South Shore Hospital and were transferred to Stroger Hospital, where the older man was pronounced dead. The Cook County Medical Examiner’s office did not immediately confirm the fatality.

Just after noon on Sunday, a 23-year-old was shot and killed in the 7000 block of South Vernon. The man was standing outside when a dark colored sedan pulled up, and several shots were fired. The 23-year-old was pronounced dead at St. Bernard Hospital, and a 15-year-old boy also suffered a graze wound on his foot. 

He was taken to Comer Children's Hospital in good condition, according to police. 

Around 9 p.m., an 18-year-old man was shot in both of his legs in the 5400 block of South Damen, authorities said. The teen transported himself to Holy Cross Hospital in critical condition, but he was later pronounced dead. Police said the circumstances surrounding the shooting weren't immediately known. 

Each of the weekend’s shootings occurred as follows:

Friday

  • A 24-year-old man was shot in the 3500 block of North Laramie at approximately 7:53 p.m. He was taken to Community First Hospital in good condition, police said.
  • A 17-year-old boy was shot in the left shoulder and leg in the 6900 block of South Campbell. He was taken to Holy Cross Hospital in stable condition.
  • At approximately 9:15 p.m. in the 7200 block of South Vincennes, a 27-year-old man was walking on a sidewalk when he was shot by an unknown man. The victim was shot in the right arm and back, and was taken to St. Bernard’s in stable condition.
  • One man was shot and another man was stabbed when a group of four men approached the pair in the 2600 block of West North Avenue. A 30-year-old man was shot in the back and the leg, and a 19-year-old was stabbed in the abdomen. Both men were taken to Stroger Hospital in stable condition.
  • A man was shot to death in the 8800 block of South Eggleston at 10:19 p.m. Friday night. Police reported to a shots fired call and found a man with gunshot wounds to his side and buttocks. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
  • A 23-year-old man was standing on a porch when an unknown man walked up and fired shots at him in the 7500 block of South Ridgeland. The man was transported to Jackson Park Hospital in serious condition with a gunshot wound to the head.
  • Around 11:50 p.m., three people were shot while in a car on the Stevenson Expressway, according to Illinois State Police. Five people were in the vehicle headed south on I-55 near the I-94 interchange when shots rang out, authorities said. One person was shot in the abdomen and leg, while another was shot in the hand and the third suffered a graze wound to the neck, according to police. They were taken to Stroger Hospital and their conditions were unknown.

Saturday

  • At 5:45 a.m. in the 1200 block of South California, a 32-year-old man was shot in the groin and abdomen during an attempted carjacking. He was driven to the hospital, where he’s listed in critical condition.
  • A 19-year-old man was shot in the thigh in the 8700 block of South Sangamon at 7:30 a.m. Saturday morning. He was taken to the hospital in stable condition.
  • An unknown assailant in a light-colored truck fired several shots at a 29-year-old man in the 900 block of North Long at 10:08 a.m. Saturday morning. The man was hit in the foot and brought himself to West Suburban Hospital in good condition.
  • Around 7:32 p.m., a 29-year-old woman was shot in the right shin in the 5700 block of South Paulina. She was taken to Stroger Hospital in good condition.
  • A 20-year-old man was brought to St. Bernard Hospital in serious condition after he was shot in the left side and left arm. The shooting occurred around 7:47 p.m. in the 6700 block of South Ashland.
  • In the 1300 block of South Troy, a 34-year-old man was shot while standing on a sidewalk at 8:01 p.m.. An unknown assailant in a white sedan fired shots at him, hitting him in the groin. He was taken to Mt. Sinai in stable condition.
  • Around 9:31 p.m., a 21-year-old man was standing on a sidewalk in the 1600 block of North Natchez when he was shot in the leg. He was taken to Loyola in stable condition after an assailant in a grey sedan drove by and fired shots at him.
  • Two men were shot in the 7100 block of South Artesian at approximately 9:41 p.m. on Saturday night. An 18-year-old was shot in the back and chest, and was pronounced dead at Holy Cross. A 59-year-old man was also shot, and was taken to the hospital in serious condition.
  • A man and a woman were shot at around 10:26 p.m. in the 6600 block of S. Campbell, according to police. The victims were standing on a front porch when they heard shots and felt pain. The 21-year-old woman was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in stable condition with a gunshot wound to the leg, authorities said, while an adult male was shot in the right hand and refused medical attention.
  • Around 11 p.m., a 23-year-old man walked into West Suburban Medical Center more than 24 hours after being shot. He was standing on the sidewalk in the 1200 block of S. Komensky at around 8 p.m. Friday night when he heard shots and felt pain. He was listed in stable condition with a graze wound to the left ankle, police said.

Sunday

  • Two men, ages 21 and 46, were shot as they wrestled with a gun inside a home on Chicago's Southwest Side early Sunday, according to police. The incident occurred around 2:04 a.m. inside an apartment in the 4500 block of S. Karlov Ave., officials said. They were wrestling with the weapon when it discharged, striking them. The younger man suffered multiple gunshot wounds to the right arm and was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in stable condition, according to police. The 46-year-old man was shot in the chest and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was listed in stable condition.
  • The weekend’s third fatality occurred around 2:06 a.m. on the city’s West Side. A 35-year-old man was sitting in a parked car in the 3600 block of W. Chicago Ave. when a male offender approached and opened fire. The victim suffered multiple gunshot wounds to the head and body and was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
  • Around 2:47 a.m., two men were standing on the street in the 200 block of E. 75th St. when another man approached and fired shots, according to police. A 30-year-old man was shot in the left leg and taken in stable condition to the University of Chicago Medical Center, while a 23-year-old man was shot in the abdomen and buttocks and taken to Stroger Hospital in stable condition, authorities said.
  • A 17-year-old boy was walking through a vacant lot in the 300 block of S. Cicero around 3:55 a.m. when he heard shots and felt pain, police said. He was taken in stable condition to Mount Sinai Hospital with a gunshot wound to the left leg, authorities said.
  • Officials said a man walked into Mount Sinai Hospital after a shooting in the 6000 block of S. Vernon at around 4:45 a.m. The 29-year-old victim had a gunshot wound to the left shoulder and was listed in stable condition, according to police.
  • A 56-year-old man was shot while in the 6600 block of S. Evans at around 5:38 a.m., according to police. The victim was outside when someone exited a white sedan and opened fire before fleeing the scene, authorities said. He was shot in the right leg and taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in stable condition.
  • Around 6:36 a.m., a 28-year-old man was shot twice in the torso in the 5800 block of S. Michigan Ave., according to police. He took himself to Mercy Hospital, and was transferred to Stroger Hospital in stable condition, officials said.
  • Four people were wounded, one fatally, in a shooting on the city’s Far South Side early Sunday. The victims, who were all men, gave differing accounts, according to police, who later said they were all part of the same incident in the 1500 block of E. 82nd St. at around 5:15 a.m. A 31-year-old man was walking on the sidewalk when someone opened fire from a white sedan, authorities said. He was shot in the groin and back and taken to Advocate Christ Medical, where he was listed in stable condition. A 34-year-old man was also shot in the left forearm, according to police, and taken to Ingalls Hospital in stable condition. Two other men, ages 23 and 40, took themselves to South Shore Hospital, initially reporting that they were shot at 7900 S. Phillips, though police said they were part of the same shooting. The younger man was shot in the face and the 40-year-old man was shot in the neck and right hand, according to police. They were transferred to Stroger Hospital where the older man was pronounced and the 23-year-old’s condition was unknown.
  • Around 11:16 a.m., a 19-year-old man was in the 6800 block of S. Ada when he said another man approached and shot him in the left foot before fleeing in a vehicle, according to police. He was taken to Holy Cross Hospital where he was listed in good condition.
  • Just after noon, a 23-year-old man was shot and killed in the 7000 block of South Vernon. A dark colored sedan pulled up and an occupant in the vehicle fired shots, striking the man. He was pronounced dead at St. Bernard. A 15-year-old boy also suffered a graze wound on his foot, and is listed in good condition. 
  • Around 7:46 p.m. in the 2900 block of W. 38th Place, a 29-year-old man was sitting in a parked car and was shot in the arm. He also suffered a graze wound to the head after an unknown assailant jumped out of a fan and fired shots at him. He was taken to Mt. Sinai in stable condition, according to police. 
  • A delivery driver was shot in the leg in the 4400 block of W. Carroll at approximately 8:05 p.m. A man attempted to rob the driver with a handgun, and as the driver fled the scene the man shot him in the leg. The victim was taken to Stroger Hospital in stable condition, police said. 
Monday
  • A 23-year-old man was shot while riding a bike about 40 minutes after midnight Monday in the 400 block of West 87th Street. The man was riding a bike eastbound on 87th Street when he heard "several loud" noises and realized he'd been shot, police said. He was transported to Advocate Christ Medical Center in stable condition, according to authorities.  

In each incident, no one is in custody and authorities continue to investigate.
