Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel on Friday addressed a national summit that the Congressional Black Caucus is holding in Chicago on urban violence.
The mayor said sensible gun laws, youth jobs and safe havens for children are needed. Emanuel says policing, prevention, parenting and gun penalties would help.
The wide-ranging gathering of lawmakers, academics, law enforcement experts and the public is at Chicago State University on the city's South Side. It followed a violent night in Chicago that saw six people shot, including a woman in the Austin neighborhood who was wounded in a drive-by involving a shotgun.
U.S. Rep. Bobby Rush and Sen. Robin Kelly were among those who called for the emergency summit to address ongoing issues of violence in Chicago and other cities.
"With all due respect to Newtown and Arizona and the mass murders, we needed to have voices for the urban areas and the urban violence," said Kelly.
A town hall meeting was scheduled where the caucus said it will announce its priorities to address the problems of gun, gang, domestic and youth violence.
